Beverly Hills, California
Nicole Richie married Joel Madden at her father Lionel Richie’s Beverly Hills estate on December 11, 2010.
The evening ceremony had a Versailles theme and was planned by Mindy Weiss.
As 155 guests arrived at the nuptials, they were greeted by a 47-year-old elephant named Tai. Richie kept the elephant, a symbol of good luck, a surprise from her groom.
She walked down the aisle in a high-neck lace Marchesa wedding dress inspired by Grace Kelly. As she made her entrance, her father’s 1986 hit, which he wrote for her, “Ballerina Girl,” was played.
The couple said their vows under two entwined trees covered with white hydrangeas. Reverend Run, of Run DMC, officiated.
Among those in attendance were Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz, Samantha Ronson and Richie’s godfather Quincy Jones. Benji Madden served as best man while Kidada Jones was a bridesmaid.
Following the vows, a reception was held in a tent erected over the pool. Tables were set up on a hand painted floor, while antique chandeliers hung from the ceiling and a wall of mirrors lined the wall.
The couple shared their first dance to “What a Wonderful World,” by Louis Armstrong, followed by the father-daughter dance to Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable.”
The dinner menu, by P. Wesley Lieberher of Grindaus LA, included butternut squash ravioli, beef au jus with truffle mushroom risotto and seared ahi tuna with chive wasabi cream.
For dessert, Cake Opera provided a red velvet wedding cake.
