Melissa Etheridge says plans to legalize her 2003 wedding to Tammy Lynn Michaels are on hold after the California Supreme Court affirmed a state ban on gay marriage. Etheridge and Michaels had planned to marry during California’s brief legalization of same-sex marriages.

Melissa Etheridge announced plans last year to legalize her 2003 wedding to Tammy Lynn Michaels. However, after the California Supreme Court affirmed a state ban on gay marriages yesterday, Etheridge says their wedding plans are up in the air.

“I wanted to wait until I knew that when I step into City Hall and I’m there with my wife and that clerk signs that piece of paper, I want to know that it’s free and clear,” Etheridge said in a statement. “My wife and I consider ourselves to be married, we would like that to be recognized some day civically.”

Etheridge and Michaels exchanged vows at Dick Clark’s Malibu estate in 2003. She said in October they were looking for the right time to legalize their union.

The same sex marriages of Ellen De Generes to Portia de Rossi and George Takei to Brad Altman will remain valid as they took place during California’s brief legalization.
