We’ve been waiting all season for Derek Shepherd to propose to Meredith Grey on “Grey’s Anatomy” and tonight was the night.
The proposal was unique and special in a MerDer kind of way. Although the title of the episode, “Elevator Love Story,” led many to guess Derek would propose in the elevator, nobody could have predicted the way he finally did it.
Here is a recap of the proposal:
Meredith gets into the elevator and Derek is waiting for her. “C’mon in,” he says.
CT scans and charts from all of the patients they have saved together line the walls. Derek takes Meredith back through each case, remembering their first surgery together, to their first kiss, to Izzy’s clean scan from the same day.
Derek tells Meredith her “dark and twisty” self-characterization is not a flaw, but instead is a strength. “If there’s a crisis, you don’t freeze you move forward,” he says. “You get the rest of us to move forward because you’ve seen worse and you know we’ll survive too.”
As Meredith glances around at all the files on the walls she begins to smile. “I’m not going to get down on one knee,” Derek says. “I’m not going to ask a question. I love you Meredith Grey and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Without hesitation Meredith says, “And I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
