Today officially kicks off the engagement season. And who better to get holiday proposal tips from than celebrity jewelry designer Neil Lane? Lane recently designed engagement rings for Jessica Simpson and Ali Fedotowsky, and also partnered with Kay Jewelers to launch Neil Lane Bridal, a collection of intricate, vintage-inspired engagement and wedding rings influenced by Hollywood glamour.

“Approximately 20% of all engagements are at the holidays,” Lane tells Celebrity Bride Guide. “Why? Because family is around, gift giving is in the air, and it’s a big-impact time to make a proposal. An engagement ring is significant, not your typical holiday gift. It is a reflection of your love.”

Neil Lane’s Top 5 Holiday Proposal Tips:

1. Be Creative. “You can have more fun with the proposal at the holidays. Most people have time off work and can get a bit more creative. Perhaps you are traveling and want to pick a romantic location, like the Eiffel Tower or Empire State Building.”

2. Embrace the Holiday Spirit. “The holidays are a joyous time of the year. Love is in the air. People are happy, and I think there is actually more of a chance she will say yes at Christmas than on a regular day.”

3. Propose Privately. “Although you may be at home surrounded by friends and family, the actual proposal should always be a private moment.”

4. Don’t Give Clues. “The engagement ring is truly the ultimate gift. However, if you are proposing on New Year’s Eve, you better give a Hanukkah or Christmas gift first, or you will definitely ruin the surprise.”

5. Get the Best. “When it comes to the budget, I don’t believe anyone should go into debt or miss paying their rent to buy a ring. However, I do believe you have to stretch a little –- it even has to hurt a little.”

Thanks again to Neil Lane for sharing these “gems” with us, and best wishes to all future grooms popping the question this holiday season!
