Sarah Michelle Gellar married Freddie Prinze Jr. on September 1, 2002 at El Careyes Resort near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Sixty guests joined the four-day destination wedding, including Shannon Doherty, Wilmer Valderrama and Dule Hill. The couple exchanged vows in a non-denominational ceremony officiated by their friend, director Adam Shankman.
The groom wore a white linen suit by Sy Devore and went barefoot. The bride, who was given away by her mother, wore a strapless layered Vera Wang gown and flip-flops. The ceremony took place inside a private villa, Sol Del Oriente, after rain forced them to change their outdoor beach plans.
Following the vows, a reception was held overlooking Playa Blanca. Round tables were set up decorated with votive candles, white flowers and white linens. The dinner menu included filet mignon, lobster tails and egg rolls. For dessert, local baker Jesus Verdusco created a four-tier vanilla wedding cake adorned with rosebuds.
The couple shared their first dance to “Someone to Watch Over Me,” performed by a Guadalajara band. Afterwards, guests joined the newlyweds on the dance floor and boogied to traditional Mexican music. The couple left the wedding at 3 a.m. as guests showered them in rose petals.
They stayed in Mexico for their honeymoon.
